Journey To Kasese

At 7:30 sharp Enoch and Edson arrived at the MUGH to pick Jenna and I up to begin our journey to Kasese.  We were joined by one of Enoch’s daughters and Nelson.  After a bit of maneuvering all of Jenna and I’s luggage was strapped to the top of the van and we were off!

The journey was beautiful, with lots of great scenery:

Once we arrived in Kasese we met a lot of people including the prime minster, Hon. Loice Biira Bwambale,  of the cultural institution that Enoch works for.   Here I learned that the people who live in the Rwentutu Mountains have been ignored as a cultural group by the larger Ugandan government, who for many years refused to put a school in the area.  The cultural organization has been petitioning for equal rights and eventually in 2003 they were recognized.  The Rwentutu school is now seven years old, having its first P7 examinations this year.

[Disclaimer here, I am not verifying this paragraph as 100% correct, it is as I understand the situation from our conversation but in Ugandan English word meanings are more flexible and I may be confused on a few points.]

Additionally we were introduced to the deputy of education, who welcomed us to Kasese and mentioned that he hoped our partnership with Kasese would continue to develop into a larger program.
After all this we finally got to our new home!  It is a beautiful four-bedroom house near the heart of the Town of Kasese.  Jenna and I live here with Edson, our fearless driver and Janet, who helps us with cooking!  Jenna and I spent the afternoon unpacking, resting, and exploring our new neighborhood.  For dinner we ate out again because it was too late to go shopping and we had no food.  We went to the White House Garden Restaurant, which is a beautiful out door space where Jenna, Janet and I enjoyed our meals.  Jenna had a liver stew and I had chicken, which proved difficult to cut up in the dark!

Note:  There is the district of Kasese which goes all the way to the boarder to the DRC and there is Kasese town, I am currently living in Kasese town.  The school that we are teaching in is in the district of Kasese but not a in our town.
