Today was the 1st day of our new life, as Edson
eloquently stated. We started the
day by visiting many markets and buying food to eat. I was surprised at how
much of the food looked familiar.
I had been told that we would need help because if we went to the market we
wouldn’t know what to do with the food that was being sold. This isn’t entirely true. At the market I noticed tomatoes,
beans, rice, nuts, pineapple, jackfruit, mangos, chicken, eggs, to name a
few. However some of the staples
like matoke I will need help learning the ways to prepare it. Additionally Janet and Edson help us
get good prices, because Jenna and I are mazungo (sp?) which means both white
person and money we are charged a lot more than the locals. Edson and Janet helped us find the best
vendors and the best prices.
Kasese has many markets and I wouldn’t know what to look for if it
weren’t for our friends.
Once back at home we got to make fresh pineapple juice! Janet showed us how and it is really
very simple. You just take ¼ of a
pineapple, cut it off the skin, cut it into strips, put the strips in the bowl
then mash up the pineapple by hand.
Once it is juicy and mashed add a bit of sugar, fill the rest of the
bowl up with boiled water, strain and vola, fresh pineapple juice! This was a delicious pre-lunch
snack.

This is Janet after she taught us how to make fresh pineapple juice! |
After we enjoyed our pineapple juice some boys from the
neighborhood stopped by. They were
friends with the last group of UW student teachers. After we introduced ourselves Jenna went and two soccer
balls she brought and we all played soccer together, Tadeo is going to help me
improve my soccer skills. He
already taught be a trick where you grab the ball with your feet and basically
throw it in front of you.
For dinner we had potatoes, onions, and tomatoes. Janet guided Jenna and I through the
process. We are finally starting
to earn our keep.
